The
ct health @lert network is a grant project funded through the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Bioterrorism
Program to provide Connecticut's local health departments with:
- Internet-based communications and information access
- Workforce training and development
- Organizational
capacity to respond to bioterrorism and other health threats
The
Connecticut Department of Public Health is leading the development
of the network, in partnership with the Connecticut Association
of Directors of Health and other State agencies.
One
of the goals of the ct health @lert network is to give public
health professionals and their community partners continuing
education opportunities, particularly in the areas of bioterrorism
and emergency preparedness. The ct health @lert network is
working to build a distance learning infrastructure that will
enable public health professionals to receive training from
a wide variety of modalities, from the traditional lecture
in a classroom setting to Internet-based training courses
taken on a desktop computer.
Working
together with the academic community and local health agencies,
the ct health @lert network has carried more than 40 satellite
broadcasts of Public Health Training Network programs, at
more than 10 locations across the State. Over 1,000 public
health professionals have attended these programs since the
fall of 1999. The ct health @lert network has provided more
than 40 local health departments in Connecticut with computers
and Internet access, bringing us closer to our goal of having
100% of CT's local health departments connected to the Internet.
The Connecticut Department of Public Health also maintains
an Internet-based broadcast fax system with local health jurisdictions
for health advisories and alerts, thanks to the ct health
@lert network grant.
Now,
local health directors can log on to a secure area on the
Connecticut Department of Public Health website and view real-time
health data about their jurisdiction, as well as submit certain
reports to the State. Be sure to visit the local health pages
at the Connecticut Department of Public Health website http://www.state.ct.us/dph/Local_health/index.asp
Connecticut
Department of Public Health receives CDC Bioterrorism Program
funding in two other areas: 1) epidemiology and surveillance
and 2) laboratory capacity for biological agents. The ct health
@lert network grant is funded through August 2002, with the
potential for a two-year renewal.
